A Thought and a Question

So, it's pretty common for sympathetic characters in books to be readers.

Movie characters often go to the movies, and there are many examples of them being obsessed with film.

It's not as easy, though, for me to recall instances of TV characters watching TV shows. What about you? Examples to share?

  1. Watching TV was always a big part of the Simpsons. Maybe cause animation allowed them set up worlds within worlds.

In a traditional three camera sitcom the living room's TV is always on on the fourth wall. So even when they're watching TV on Seinfeld or Roseanne, they're staring at that studio audience/camera. It's kinda creepy and fake.

TV is full of people who work in Television though. Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore, 30 Rock, Murphy Brown.

  2. Plus the Sorkin contributions Sports Night (aw, brill) and Studio 60 (aw, misguided).

TV about making TV (yes, rampant! quite rampant!) is different from having an episode of The Office where everyone watches an episode of Glee together, though.

Two things to brainstorm now. Yay, Friday!
