So.

Most things I can't control right now, but one thing I can do is offer recommendations of things to read/watch/listen to.

What to Expect in December

As is usual for me, I'll be spending December highlighting some of the best things I read, saw, watched, and listened to over the past year.

Every few days, I'll pause to recommend organizations or books or other things you might consider throwing your money at during the upcoming holiday season.

See You in July!

I'm taking a break from The Daily Wreck for the month of June.

This blog does have more than 1,400 posts (!!), though, so why not click around the index/tags/archive and explore a bit?

Next Week: Spotlight on Hyperbole and a Half

Although I have mentioned the work of Allie Brosh many times, I have never dedicated a full post to her 2013 book, Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened.

This is alarming, as I love this comic/memoir very much. As in, "I would save this book in a fire." As in, "if we were friends in December 2013, you received a copy of this book as a gift."

Next week, the remedy --- with nearly 400 pages of content to work with, I'll be highlighting a different snippet each day.

Get ready for dogs, absurdist hilarity, and almost tangible devastation!

Happy New Year

Welcome to 2019, or, as I'm optimistically dubbing it, "The Year When Everything Gets Fixed" (hahahahahahasob)

I'm going to be trying a "one week on, one week off" thing, so I'll see you back here in a bit.

What to Expect in December

Every day in December, you will see two things from The Daily Wreck:

1. A "Best of 2018" nugget
2. A suggestion for an organization that will do good things if you give them money

Enjoy!

Pause

I'll be away from The Daily Wreck for a few weeks. I expect to be back next month with, among other things, some "Best of 2018" lists. See you then!

Also, for those in the U.S. --- VOTE ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6

I'll be back in next Monday with a week devoted to The Goodness of The Good Place.

(Re)Statement of Purpose: Salvage

This year sucked my brain out of my head and made it a small, wormy thing that flinches at the beginning of each day.

Next year, it's time to reset. I want to root myself again in the things that I choose, instead of dangling in a perpetual state of horrified reaction.

Last month, Katie Presley posited that the thesis of the (truly excellent) Lady Bird is "attention is love." In 2018, I am determined to spend my attention wisely.

So, I'm trying for a reset on The Daily Wreck. Here's the new plan:
  • One recommendation every day
  • It could still be a book or a movie or a TV show or a website, but it could also be an article or a Twitter feed or a restaurant or a person or an object or ...
  • Not everything will be happy, but I will be avoiding anything that leaves me with a lingering sense of dread or hopelessness or horror
  • The posts will also show up via Twitter and Tumblr (and probably also TinyLetter)

Let's save and share the good stuff while we can.

HELLO. I am back. Again.

Another move and, with it, another unexpected hiatus. It wasn't Comcast's fault this time.

But! Back again! (Although now coming from a new and very different location.)

New content tomorrow!

HELLO. I am back.

The unexpected hiatus was due to moving and being without internet for a very long time because Comcast is terrible.

But! We are back! New content tomorrow!!

Notice of a Moderately Brief Service Interruption

The Daily Wreck is on hiatus for the next week and a half or so!

In the meantime, don't forget to enjoy the made-for-serendipitous-discoveries index and the oh-so-browsable sister site The Daily Wreck Collection.

See you in a bit!

Notice of a Brief Service Interruption

The Daily Wreck is off this week.

If you're going through withdrawal, you can amuse yourself by looking up stuff in the index or by browsing the brand new sister site, The Daily Wreck Collection.

Notice of a Brief Service Interruption

I'm a bit overwhelmed at the moment, so it's going to be pretty quiet around here for the next couple of weeks.

We'll have the 300th recommendation to celebrate when things resume, though!

See You in a Week or So

The (almost) Daily Wreck is going on a short hiatus.

What a great opportunity to poke around in the Index of Names and Titles!

You could go to "M" to see how I dealt with both David Mitchell the author and David Mitchell the actor.

Or! You could look at "H" to see my love of all things related to Audrey Hepburn. While you're there, you can take note of the fact that I've spelled Katharine Hepburn's name correctly.

Or, you could always just start with "A," I guess.

When The (almost) Daily Wreck returns from hiatus, we'll jump right into a celebration of the wonder that is Caroline Dhavernas.

See you then!

A Brief Time of Necessary Neglect

Sadly, I'll probably be neglecting things around here for the rest of the week.

But remember the Index of Names and Titles! It is a thing that exists.

A Short Break

I'm taking a little time off. See you in a week!

In the meantime, please enjoy clicking around the Index of Names and Titles. You can:
  • review all the times I've said something nice about Preston Sturges,
  • or count the number of titles that start with the word "Death,"
  • or find out who Zuleika Dobson is,
  • or investigate why on earth Randy Quaid got mentioned somewhere.

Index of Names and Titles

A few things to know about using this Index:
  • Locators in bold indicate it's a post focusing on that title/name in particular.
  • A locator with parentheses, such as (Rec. #1), means that the entry is mentioned in the post, but is not part of the main recommendation.
  • Character names are generally listed if the post in which they're mentioned includes both first and last name.
  • Titles that begin with numbers are alphabetized under the spelled-out number (e.g., the documentary 35 Up is under "T").
  • Inclusion in the Index does not necessarily imply approval.
